The Hampshire Junior Girls’ Autumn Meeting took place at Peterfield Golf Club on Saturday 17th October and what a great end to the season it was.
18 girls from 9 different clubs across the county were welcomed with the most superb hospitality at Peterfield Golf Club for the final event of the 2020 junior season.
County Captain, Debbie Tapply started all of our groups off on the first tee and we were quickly under way. Despite a sky filled with suspicious clouds, the weather stayed dry for the first time in any of our major junior events this year.
Petersfield was in excellent condition for the time of year but as you’d expect, there was not much run on the ball and the steep banks and long rough presented some difficult shots for many. The autumnal conditionals, coupled with some exceptionally fast greens proved to be a challenging test and resulted in a rise of the CSS to 74. Having said that, across the field an incredible 14 birdies made their way onto score cards.
As always, it was a real pleasure to walk out on the course and witness not only some fantastic ball striking but the fun and laughter that was had by on the way round. We received some wonderful comments from the Petersfield members about how delightful their interactions had been with the girls on the course and what a priviledge it was to host us. Yet again, all of you girls make us so proud to be involved in Hampshire Girls Golf.
Although we were unable to share a meal this year, we were able to hold a socially distanced prize giving outdoors for the girls and their families.
Junior and Intermediate Golf Director, Hannah Holloway began proceedings by conveying our sincerest thanks to Petersfield for allowing us to hold our concluding event at their facilities and for their exceptional organisation and hospitality throughout the day. Hannah went on to thank Di Stock and Jackie Keay for being our rules officials and braving the cold in their buggies all day to ensure the smooth running of this event; Ann Younger for all her time organising and administring the event; Debbie Tapply for starting all of the girls; Kate & Terry for their steadfast support and help on the day and to Chris Quinn for attending to present the prizes.
The prize giving began with announcing the winners of the day’s competition. First up was the presentation of the President’s Cup to this year’s best newcomer, awarded to Hatty Richardson (Corhampton) on her debut Hampshire Girls’ event with a score of 27. Congratulations Hatty, we’re so pleased to welcome you into the Hampshire fold and look forward to seeing you at more of our events in 2021.
Our 3rd and 2nd Nett prize winners, Olivia Diment (Corhampton) and Harriet Riches (Alresford) were then announced with scores of 33 and 34 respectively, before our scratch and Dot Hayward winner for 2020 was revealed. As in 2019, the gross and nett prize were won by one individual and in 2020 that winner, with a nett score of 35, was Hannah Hellyer (Hayling Island). Consistency was the key to Hannah’s winning round with 12 pars on the card. Hannah thanked her playing partners for their company on the way round and praised the host club and organisers for putting on the event.
A few additional prizes were also awarded to conclude the Hampshire Girls season these included:
- La Moye Salver for the most improved player – as always, there were a few contenders for this prize in 2020 with a number of our girls recieving significant handicap cuts, depite golf being put on hold during lockdown. However, this year’s La Moye Salver went to Freya Watts (Boundary Lakes) after managing to reduce her handicap by a whopping 14.5 shots this season. Now playing off 11, we’re looking forward to following your success in 2021 Freya.
- Summer Knockout Trophy – sadly this year’s final had to be postponed after torrential rain forced a course closure at North Hants Golf Club. This year’s all sister final between Izzy & Tilly Lawson is taking place on 18th October and we’ll let you know the outcome as soon as we can. For now the trophy is being kept in a secure location ready to present at our Performance Training Session on 7th November.
- Star Baker – some of you will remember the bake off competition that we ran during lockdown which yeilded the most incredible cake creations. The winner, as voted by members Hampshire Ladies Golf, was Lily Walker who was presented with a small token to mark the achievement.
- Kerry Smith Award – presented each year to a Hampshire Junior Girl for her contribution to Hampshire Golf, the winner of this award for 2020 is Hannah Hellyer. Hannah has had some landmark moments this year: rounds of 75 (+1) and 70 (-4) gross in Hayling Ladies Championships; Ladies Club Champion at Southwick Park Golf Club and recording her first ever hole-in-one on the 1st at Hayling (what a way to start a round!!) are just some of the highlights. Hannah also made the cut for the England Girls’ Amateur Strokeplay and has been reselected for England Regionals in 2021. While achieving all of this she has become a catagory 1 golfer for the first time, virtually cutting her handicap in half. Every time we see you Hannah you have a smile on your face, you’re a joy and a credit to Hampshire Girls’ Golf. Congratulations on a great year of golf, we can’t wait to see what 2021 has up its sleeve for you.
We couldn’t conclude yesterday’s prize giving without presenting a small token of thanks to Izzy Lawson, Hampshire Junior Girls’ Captain for 2020. It really wasn’t the year that we wanted to give you as Captain Izzy but regardless of the challenges you’ve shared your positive outlook with us all at every event that we have been able to hold. You will be truely missed from the Junior section but we hope you will continue to participate in our Intermediate events and share future successes with your Hampshire family. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being a fantastic Hampshire Captain Izzy.
